
Iron Infusions
What will you and your GP discuss prior to an iron infusion?
- The benefits you may receive from an iron infusion.
- Your medical conditions, allergies, medications and supplements you may take.
- The procedure, costs and associated risks and ask to you to sign a consent form.
Your GP will provide you with a prescription for you to take to a pharmacy to collect your iron.
What are the risks of an iron infusions?
Iron infusion side effects are minimal but can include:
- Bloating or swelling of your face and limbs
- Nausea, cramping or diarrhea
- Headaches
- Joint or muscle pains
- Skin problems, including skin staining
- Chest pain
- Low blood pressure
What happens during the procedure?
An iron infusion will take approximately 1 hour and will be undertaken in a private treatment room at North Medical.
Your GP and a Practice Nurse will:
- Lay you down on a treatment room bed
- Clean the area where your canular will be placed
- Attach the iron intravenous (IV) drip to the canular
- Monitor you while the procedure takes place
